On September 13, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released a Binding Operational Directive (BOD) instructing the Federal Executive Branch departments and agencies to take actions regarding the use of information security products by Kaspersky Lab.

Creighton is aware of the news and rumors being circulated in the media about Kaspersky Lab, a Moscow-based cyber security company, and its suspected ties to the Russian government. Currently Creighton uses Kaspersky anti-virus on Creighton owned PC’s and Macs.

In our globalized world, many cyber security companies are based in countries outside the US and many of these companies are regarded as leaders in their security field. Kaspersky is one such firm. Creighton’s Information Security Department will continue to monitor fact-based sources, and technical resources to evaluate any potential risk to Creighton from continued use of Kaspersky products.

Rumors aside, Creighton has not received any detailed information that would cause us to discontinue usage of Kaspersky products.  In the spirit of “stewardship of resources,” we are preparing contingency plans in the event that factual data is identified that indicates a need to discontinue use of Kaspersky products.
